Sydney Markets Cherry Auction – from $65 in 1980 to $65,000 in 2011

The 2011 Sydney Markets Annual Cherry Auction raised $65,000 for a single box of cherries. The winning bid was by Norton Street Grocers and with today’s auction, result Sydney Markets has now raised well over $1 million for Sydney charities.

Now in its 32nd year, the Sydney Markets Annual Cherry Auction makes an important contribution to Sydney charities with this years’ proceeds donated to Save Our Sons, a charity dedicated to fundraising and research on Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a degenerative muscular disease with a 100 percent mortality rate, and the Sydney Markets Foundation.

Brad Latham, Chief Executive Officer of Sydney Markets Limited, was amazed at the generosity shown in today’s auction.

"In its inaugural year in 1980, the winning bid was $65 and today we raised $65,000,” said Mr Latham. “Sydney Markets thanks the generosity shown by George Angelidis of Norton Street Grocers, who bought this years box in honour of his late father, Con.”
